Greetings to you! Well it has been quite a while since I got a chance to give my two cents worth on this cyber soap box! A thousand apologies for my prolonged silence. I hope you missed me though!! I must say so much has happened in the meantime including some weird and wonderful things! For one, I've been enjoying the bliss of love with my darling Arsenal FC. The team that causes me so much joy and heartache, has been dishing out joy aplenty lately, having gone on an unbeaten run in all domestic competitions since the turn of the year. They haven't always been easy to watch, but at least they've managed to avoid defeat and more recently have looked to be back to their irresistable best. The result is that I have renewed faith that we can and and will get something out of a season that promised to be the worst in recent memory. The FA Cup is a real possibility (don't believe the hype about it being insignificant, even foreign teams cherish this trophy) and we're through to the last eight of the Champions League, where anything can and always happens! COME ON YOU GUNNERS!
On the domestic soccer front, things are getting really hectic. A few weeks ago it looked as if Supersport United were going to run away with the title. But now, the picture has changed almost completely, with Orlando Pirates playing some magical footbal and piling on the pressure on the defending champions. But something rather intriguing happened recently. Orlnado Pirates have decided to have the Soweto derby against old rivals Kaizer Chiefs, postponed from the 18th of April to the 2nd May, apparently because the ANC have booked Ellis Park (aka Coca Cola Park) for ...
Hello friends! Its been a while since we last chatted. t's been a rather strange and somewhat scary couple of weeks since I last vented on this blog. My beloved Arsenal remain unbeaten this year, even though they don't really win much, they have yet to lose a match this year! Strange stuff! The Proteas returned home from Australia with their tails noticeable missing from between their legs! In fact our boys broke a long standing drought and did the nation proud, by winning both the Test and ODI series in fine style, against those bloody Aussies no less! I'm sure most South African sports fans will agree with me that any victory over the Aussies, whether in rugby or jukskei, is a special victory! So well done to Mickey Arthur and the boys! Now let's show them it was no fluke by hammering them on home soil. I must be honest, to lose to the Aussies at home now, would really hurt.
Apart from the Proteas proving at last that they're no chokers, Bafana Bafana have also being defying the odds lately. Our nations biggest under-achievers guided by the much-maligned Joel Santana, notched up a record 5th succesive win when they beat a team that looked a lot like the Zambian national side. It may have been an understrength Zambian side, but Santana also fielded a side made up of our local "super stars" only and they got the job done. Teko Modise's form for the national side continues to be awesome. He has actually scored more goals for Bafan Bafana than he has for Pirates. So who cares if these 5 wins in a row came against weakened sides in friendly matches. The fact is that winning is a habit and Bafana ...
So it appears that quite a lot of people within the enigmatic body called the NEC, are not very happy with President Kgalema Motlanthe. Why you might ask? Well, apparently he's not toeing the line drawn for him by the NEC. He is not following the instructions of the ANC and has been summoned to a meeting to explain his delinquent behaviour! Perhaps it might be easier if the ANC moved their headquarters into the Union Buildings or maybe President Kgalema Motlhanthe should move into Albert Luthuli House. Afterall there appears to be no actual difference between government and the ANC. I mean, if the president of the Republic runs the country in accordance with the strict instructions of the ANC's National Executive, what then is the point of having a president? The ANC is on the verge of completing a process that began at that most celebrated gathering in Polokwane back in 07. Its almost mission-accomplished in the quest to completely strip the president of the Republic (also read Cde President of the ANC) of all meaningful power. The NEC was reportedly very angry that Motlanthe got rid of Vusi Pikoli without telling them. Exactly what is it that the President can do these days without clearing it with Gwede Mantashe and co? Our president is slowly being reduced to the status of a ceremonial head of state in the mould of Marais Viljoen, the last president of the Republic who had no executive powers. There is a massive power vacuum developing at the Union Buildings.
Just indulge me for a minute here. Perhaps a plan that would please the NEC would be to make Gwede Mantashe Prime Minister! Now there's a solution! Afterall, he appears to be the only person that the NEC respects. Well ...
And so my friends, we come to the beggining of a brand spanking new year!! This give me the chance to reflect on what was an annus horibilis!! 2008 was a year that I would like to set in concrete and dump into the smelly Hartebeespoort Dam (No offence to Councellor Tony Blewett, the Mayor of the Greater Haartebeespoort community)! It was a difficult year on so many fronts, that I celebrated its demise with great glee! Comrade Thabo Mbeki (can I still call him that?) was invited to join me for a drink so we could discuss how we're going to cope (COPE get it) with the new year, but he was too busy drafting another nasty letter to JZ!
On the personal front it was a year to forget, mainly because of the passing of my beloved niece at the tender age of 24. Then there were a myriad of other challenges (new word for problems) which I wont get into. Then there was my ever-unpredictable lover Arsenal FC!! March saw an implosion which began with a horror injury to Eduardo, one of the stars of the team up to that point, and culminated in us finishing fourth, and winning NOTHING! A year that started with so much promise delivered didly squat!! I'm extremely embittered towards the year 2008!
In fairness to whoever thought up 2008, it wasn't all doom and gloom though! It was a year that I was part of a bit of history! On the 1st of June 2008 I was part of the first broadcast of South Africa's very first 24 hour news channel, the e-News Channel! That was something definately worth remembering. Sadly on Wednesday 24th December 2008) I said goodbye to the e-News Channel. As of the 2nd ...
