The 17th edition of the annual MTN South African Music Awards (SAMAs) took place at Montecasino, Johannesburg on 20th and 21st May. The SAMAs are the highlight of the South African music calendar staged under the auspices of the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA). With nearly 70 categories ranging in genre from gospel, jazz, Afrikaans, instrumental and technical, the SAMAs represent and celebrate the best of South Africa's recorded music of the previous year.
Artists may only have entered one category per album. Entries for the competition closed at the end of November 2010. RISA assembled a panel of judges from music industry experts, CD/DVD retailers and journalists who judge according to a set of criteria prescribed by RISA. A further judging process took place in February where the top five nominees were selected from all the categories namely Best Male, Best Female, Best Duo or Group, Best Newcomer and Album of the Year.
The introduction of the Best Popular Classical Album in 2009 was welcomed by the classical music fraternity as their work would also be celebrated along with their main stream counterparts. This year's award went to the album Beethoven Sonatas for Piano and Cello released under the Two Pianists label in Stellenbosch. It is a superb double CD of the cello sonata plus a transcription of the French Horn Sonata Opus 17, superbly performed by Peter Martens (cello) and Luis Magalhães (piano). Magalhães is the owner of the label Two Pianists, who also scooped last year's award in this category.
Another SAMA winner who is familiar to the Classic FM audience is the versatile flautist Wouter Kellerman. He snatched the award for his album Two Voices in the category Best Instrumental Album.
This year's awards are said to have attracted a record 100,000 visitors to the public viewing spaces at Montecasino over the two nights.
Classic FM congratulates and salutes all the winners of MTN SAMAs of 2011!
