Rodney Trudgeon

It has been almost two months since Rodney’s first broadcast on Monday 4th April at 14h00, but his return has sparked a sense of excitement brought about by his adoring fans.

When Rodney was asked for a reason for his return, he replied: "I am excited about the direction the station is taking. For the first time on South African radio, there is now a programme dedicated to full works in Richard Cock's Complete Works". Rodney also expressed his joy of another new programme, Classical Music 101 hosted by Sue Cock. "This programme is revolutionary as it explains classical music to South Africans of all ages and walks of life. It is an array of intellectual input", he states.

Classic FM has recognised the presence of its listeners in Cape Town by building a studio for Rodney to broadcast from. In turn, Rodney will keep the Classic FM listeners in other parts of the country up to date, first hand, with the latest news in the classical music scene in Cape Town.

Rodney's radio career has spanned over 30 years with his focus on making classical music more accessible and entertaining to all South Africans. After a short spell as a freelance flautist in the Durban Symphony Orchestra, Rodney joined the SABC as a presenter of news, current affairs, documentaries and feature interviews. He was editor of a major weekly magazine programme, but his passion for music soon meant that he was more in demand as a classical music presenter, producer and interviewer.

The list of international artists he has interviewed includes Joshua Bell, Nigel Kennedy, Yehudi Menuhin, Bernard Haitink, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Dame Kiri Te Kanewa, Julian Lloyd Webber and John Rutter.

Away from the microphone, Rodney Trudgeon is in great and continual demand as a speaker and lecturer on the subject of classical music appreciation and classical music news in general.

Listen to Rodney on the Classic Drive weekdays between 14h00 and 18h00 on Classic FM 102.7.
