Q: Sue, tell me about the path you have walked from your studies to your present position as host of Classical Music 101.
A: I studied BMus at the University of Cape Town. Thereafter, I found employment at the SABC as music producer. After my children were born, I decided to embark on a career in education at junior and senior school levels. As a teacher, I was able to get involved in all areas of music: composing, arranging, conducting and teaching the subject of class music on the orchestra, and jazz, string and wind ensembles, including the theory of music. The last position I held was director of music at St Mary’s School in Waverley Johannesburg for nine years!
Q: Tell me about this new programme, Classical Music 101 you are hosting. What would you ultimately like to achieve with this programme?
A: Essentially, this programme explores the make-up of classical music from the elements, forms and genres. This is my opportunity to answer all the questions I get asked about classical music! (laughs) This is education at adult level. I am passionate about classical music and I have found that there is a need to demystify it for all.
Q: What can we expect to hear on Classical Music 101 in the next few weeks?
A: I have divided the syllabus into three main themes, namely elements, periods and types of classical music. Currently, I am still exploring the elements. We looked at the dynamics, melody, rhythm, texture, and instruments supported by demonstrations of the different orchestral instruments by members of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra. Finally, we will look at how to put all the elements together. The next main theme I will explore is the periods of music from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and finally the Twentieth Century periods. The final theme is that of the types of classical music including the symphony, opera, chamber music, piano music etc.
Q: If there is one highlight this week on Classical Music 101, what would it be?
A: Listeners can look forward to an interview with conductor Graham Scott on Friday 27th May when I conclude my discussions on instruments.
